BMW AG has begun deliveries of i8 ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid sport coupe to customers in Germany. The four-seater will debut in international markets later this month.
The €126,000 car uses a 3-cylinder turbocharged 231-hp gasoline engine to power the rear wheels and 131-hp electric motor and 5.2-kW lithium-ion battery to turn the front wheels.
The i8 can accelerate from zero to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds, travel 37 km in electric mode, deliver fuel economy of 2.1 liters per 100 km (112 mpg U.S.) and emit only 49 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer.
Like its more modest i3 all-electric minicar sibling, the i8 has a frame and body made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.
