BMW AG has confirmed that its offices in Much were searched earlier this week by European Union investigators who are probing claims that Germany’s auto industry conspired to influence emission control technologies and prices.
Der Spiegel revealed the EU investigation in July. At the time, Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager warned that the companies could face “very high” fines if found guilty of collusion.
BMW has been especially outspoken in denying it has done anything improper. Analysts note that carmakers routinely cooperate on technical standards for the sake of simplifying their supply chain and lowering the cost of products they all use.
