BMW AG is recalling 257,500 cars and crossover vehicles in the U.S. to fix backup camera displays that may fail to switch on correctly.
The campaign, which will begin in November, involves certain 2018-2019 model 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Series sedans, Z4 sports cars and X3, X4, X5 and X7 crossover vehicles. BMW also will fix the problem in Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Phantom luxury sedans and 2020 model Toyota Supra sport coupes.
Affected vehicles have backup display screens that can be switched off. The screen is supposed to automatically turn on again the next time the vehicle is shifted into reverse. But in the affected cars, the screen will remain off, thereby violating federal safety standards.
Dealers will fix the glitch by reprogramming the system’s software. The description of the problem is identical to one that last month prompted Nissan Motor Co. to recall 1.2 million of its 2018-2019 models in the U.S.
