Volkswagen AG’s Bentley luxury car unit will add plug-in hybrid versions of all its models over the next few years.

CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer tells attendees at the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit that Bentley considers plug-ins a long-term solution to tighter emission and fuel economy standards rather than an interim step to such options as fuel cells or all-electric powertrains.

He notes that a hybrid system will enable Bentley drivers to visit European city centers that restrict standard piston-powered vehicles, yet make long-distance trips without the need for frequent stops to recharge the battery of a pure electric car.

The first Bentleys to receive plug-in systems will be its Bentayga crossover and next-generation Continental GT coupe. The latter system will pair a V-6 engine and electric motor to match the 500-hp output of the car’s current V-8 powerplant.
