Volkswagen AG’s Bentley unit unveiled an all-electric concept convertible called the EXP 12 Speed 6e at this week’s Geneva auto show that could lead to a production model by 2021.
Bentley says it will use the Geneva show and other upcoming events to gauge interest in the stylish two-seater and determine whether it should add an EV to its lineup. The company’s first hybrid model, a plug-in version of the new Bentayga luxury crossover vehicle, is due next year. Plug-in variants of other models are coming in subsequent years.
Noting that EVs can be visually appealing, “sexy” and emotional, Bentley chief Wolfgang Duerheimer says the EXP 12 Speed 6e is a good indication of what an electric Bentley would look like. The design combines Bentley’s large mesh grille and muscular rear with futuristic features such as tiny integrated cameras in place of side rearview mirrors. When the car starts, a white "6" symbol illuminates within the grille.
Bentley didn't include any type of top for the concept. But if a production model is approved it likely will use a retractable soft-top, according to company officials.
The interior is chock-full of high-end materials and appointments, including a large OLED display and a three-quarter steering wheel. The latter has two glass sections with embedded buttons and controls—including EV performance settings—where the wheel is cut off.
Bentley offers no details about the car’s battery, electric powertrain or driving range. The company says the vehicle is designed for rapid inductive charging and has a backup charging port hidden under the rear license plate.
