The average price of a gallon of gasoline slipped below $2.50 on Thursday for the first time since 2009, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

The average begins today is at $2.48 per gallon, down from $2.89 a month earlier and $3.22 a year ago. AAA estimates the average could fall to as little as $2.25 by the end of the month.

Lower prices are expected to continue well into 2015. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates the reduction will save the average American household nearly $600 next year.
