A new ultra-fast system that can recharge an electric bus in 15 seconds has begun tests in Geneva, Switzerland.
The technology is designed to give articulated 135-passenger buses running between the city's airport and nearby expo center a quick charge during brief stops to load or unload passengers.
The flash charging system was developed by Zurich-based power technology company AAB Group, which is working with Geneva's local public transport, power utility and industrial development agencies.
A power pickup atop the bus automatically extends to engage with a 400-kW power rail above specially equipped bus stops. The rail is powered by terminal power stations located at each end of the bus line.
The city notes that adopting the system would eliminate its use of overhead wires for its electric buses, thus giving it more flexibility to alert routes.
