Japan’s carmakers hiked domestic production nearly 5% in February, helping to deliver a 2% gain for the country’s industry output from January to February, according to preliminary government data.

A seasonally adjusted index of factory output reached a three-year high of 102.2 last month, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry reports.

The ministry says February’s growth also was driven by sector growth in chemicals and industrial machinery. The agency reiterates its cautious assessment that the industrial sector wil continue to improve.
