Sales of domestically produced cars and light trucks in Australia slid to 118,500 units in 2013 from 139,800 in 2012, according to the country's Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
The record decline supports decisions announced last year by Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. to phase out local manufacturing in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The market for Australian-made vehicles has plunged more than 40% in the past seven years as sales of lower-cost imports soared.
Toyota Motor Corp., the country's only other local producer, agrees with analysts that the pullouts by GM and Ford appear likely to destroy Australia's automotive supply base.
