Australia Liberal-National coalition government has repeated the country's two-year-old carbon tax, which charged industrial polluters about A$22 for each ton of greenhouse gases they emitted.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott made repealing the law a key goal for his government. BBC News says Australia is the worst polluter among developed nations on a per-capital basis. Abbott and other critics say the measure hiked energy prices and eliminated jobs.
The Australian Senate repealed the law by a vote of 39 to 32. Abbott described the vote as "great news for Australian families." Opponents decried it as an "appalling day for Australia," BBC reports.
Abbott aims to replace the carbon tax with a A$2.6 billion scheme funded by taxpayers that would pay industries to take steps that reduce emissions and consume cleaner energy sources.
