General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. report further sales declines in China as the country's economic slowdown deepens.

GM and its partners report 248,800 retail deliveries in China last month, down 5% from August 2014. It was the company's largest year-on-year shrinkage in five months. Sales of SUVs and MPVs helped ease shrinking demand for sedans. GM's deliveries through the first eight months of 2015 totaled a record 2.20 million units, up 2%.

Ford's sales in China dropped 3% to 79,600 units in August as demand for cars and commercial vehicles declined 1% and 9%, respectively. Ford sales in January-August totaled 700,000 units, down 1% compared with the same period last year.
