This week Audi AG unveiled its e-tron FE04 racecar for the Formula E electric vehicle series.
The carmaker teamed up with Schaeffler AG to develop the car’s electric powertrain, which includes the electric motor, transmission and power electronics packaged in a carbon-fiber housing. Unlike other Formula E teams that use a multi-gear transmission, Audi is using a single-speed gearbox.
Audi, which previously was a sponsor of the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team, will officially join Formula E with the renamed Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team for the upcoming season, which starts Dec. 2 in Hong Kong. Testing of the new race car will begin next month.
Audi plans to use the race series to test and refine electric powertrains for production vehicles. The carmaker aims to have more than 20 electrified models in its lineup before 2025, beginning next year with an e-tron crossover vehicle.
Le Mans legend Allan McNish will head the Audi Sport team. ABT drivers Lucas di Grassi, who won the drivers’ championship for the just-completed Formula E season, and Daniel Abt will remain with the team under Audi’s ownership.
