Audi AG says the sportback Q8 concept it unveiled today at the Detroit auto show is a near production-ready version of a new full-size crossover model the brand plans to launch in 2018.

Measuring 198 inches long, the Q8 is two inches shorter than the current Q7 crossover with which it shares a platform. Styling cues include a sporty coupe-like profile with a rakish roofline, frameless windows, wide C-pillars, an oversized grille and LED lighting. The doors open via touch sensors to a predefined angle.

The powertrain consists of a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission teamed with a 100-kW electric motor and a 17.9-kWh lithium ion battery pack. The combination generates 443 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Audi estimates the driving range at 620 miles, including 60 miles in electric mode.
