Audi AG says it is studying plans to introduce its first electrified car model in India by about 2020.
The company already has a staff of certified trainers for EVs in India and is among the first luxury carmaker to begin preparing for EV sales in the country. But the timing of a launch will depend in large part on the Indian government’s emerging EV policy.
Audi plans three global EV launches by 2020, followed by one additional introduction per year. The company has said it expects 30% of its global sales volume will be electrified models by 2025.
Audi is expanding its lineup of conventionally powered cars and crossovers in India in a bid to achieve double-digit growth. It says the timing of an EV launch in the market will be driven by how soon India installs a sufficient charging infrastructure to support the ownership of such vehicles.
