Volkswagen AG's Audi unit has begun developing a hybrid minicar that could deliver 235 mpg, LeftLane News reports.
The car, which is at least three years from production, would share its platform with Audi's little A1 hatchback. LeftLane News says the brand describes the vehicle internally as a "one-liter car," indicating it is being designed to consume one liter of gasoline per 100 km of travel.
Audi's parent company has shown prototype 1.0-liter cars before. The most recent model is the Volkswagen XL1, a plug-in hybrid unveiled in concept form at the Qatar auto show last year. VW confirmed earlier this year that the car will go into limited production in 2013.
VW's two-seat hypermiler will be powered by a 27-hp electric motor, lithium-ion battery and a two-cylinder, turbodiesel 48-hp engine. LeftLane News predicts the powertrain for Audi's own four-seater will include an electric motor but use a piston engine other than VW's little diesel.
