Volkswagen AG's Audi unit has begun developing a hybrid minicar that would consume one liter of gasoline per 100 kilometers traveled, LeftLane News reports.

The car, at least three years from production, will share its platform with Audi's little A1 hatchback.

VW has shown prototype 1.0-liter cars before. The most recent model is the XL1, a plug-in hybrid unveiled in concept form at the Qatar auto show last year. That two-seater will be powered by a 27-hp electric motor, lithium-ion battery and a two-cylinder, turbodiesel 48-hp engine. The company confirmed earlier this year that the VW-badged car will go into limited production in 2013.

LeftLane News predicts the powertrain in Audi's own four-seat hypermiler will include an electric motor but not VW's little diesel.
