Audi AG's R18 e-tron hybrid race cars captured the top two positions in the LMP1 class last week's 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Diesel-powered conventional R18s finished third and fifth.

The R18 hybrid's victory marked Audi's 11th at Le Mans and the first time a hybrid-powered car won the endurance race. The car started from the pole and crossed the finish line 24 hours, 378 laps and 33 pit stops later, one lap ahead of the second-place R18 hybrid and three laps head of the third-place R18.

The winning car was piloted by Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer, who also won last year's Le Mans race for Audi.

Two competing Toyota LMP1 hybrid racers crashed out at laps 82 and 134. Nissan's experimental super-efficient DeltaWing racer retired on lap 75.
