Volkswagen AG's Audi unit says its R8 e-tron electric supercar set a new EV lap record for electric passenger vehicles of 8:09.1 minutes around Germany's famed 12.9-mile Nurburgring.
The fastest lap time for an EV of any kind at the Nurburgring is 7:47.8 minutes, which was set last year by Jochen Krumbach in a Toyota TMG EV P001 racecar.
The R8 e-tron, which was piloted by race driver Markus Winkelhock, is identical to the model Audi plans to begin producing late this year. The car's dual electric motors deliver a combined 375 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque.
The R8 e-tron can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and drive about 130 miles per charge. The car will have an electronically limited top speed of 125 mph but was allowed to reach 155 mph for the Nurburgring test.
