Steelmaker ArcelorMittal is expanding applications for the innovative door ring system it developed with Honda Motor Co. to other carmakers.

The first new customer is Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, which debuted the system in its 2019 model Ram 1500 fullsize pickup truck. ArcelorMittal tells Automotive News it has at least 20 similar development programs under way with other vehicle manufacturers.

Honda introduced the system last year with its Acura RDX crossover vehicle and now is expanding it to other models.

The design uses a laser-welded, hot-stamped process to consolidate the inner and outer door rings. The result is a component that is stronger and 42 lbs lighter than a traditionally built door. AN notes that ArecelorMittal worked with Honda to develop an efficient way to laser weld both sides of the door simultaneously.
