The U.S. index of leading economic indicators, which rose 0.7% from January to February, posted a 0.3% gain in March, the Conference Board reports.
The New York City-based research group says the index's sixth straight monthly increase points to gradual improvement in economic growth this summer. Seven of the index's 10 indicators rose last month, including interest rates, building permits and stock prices.
The group says a stronger job market is boosting consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of the economy. The board's gauges of current and lagging conditions rose 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively, last month.
