An average 91% of the aluminum used in passenger cars and trucks in the U.S. is recovered and recycled at the end of a vehicle’s life, according to a study commissioned by the Aluminum Assn.

The recycling rate across vehicle applications ranges from 80% to 98%, the trade group says. The study was conducted by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling.

Aluminum can be recycled multiple times without any performance degradation, according to the report. The recycled metal can be reused in a variety of applications, including new automotive parts.

The new study supports findings from previous third-party and government reports. Click here for more information.

Citing data from Drucker Worldwide, the Aluminum Assn. predicts that usage of the lightweight material in North American automotive applications will increase 39% through 2025.
