Honda Motor Co.’s Acura unit is introducing its new touchpad infotainment control system in its 2019 RDX crossover vehicle.

Dubbed the “True Touchpad Interface,” the system is easier and more intuitive to use than a traditional touchscreen, according to the carmaker.

The touchpad sits in the center console and controls an Android-based 10.2-inch display positioned at the top of the dashboard. The layout puts the touchpad within easy reach of the driver, and the high-mounted display is within the driver’s line of forward vision.

The system’s “absolute positioning” technology maps different areas of the pad to corresponding points on the display. This allows users to quickly navigate through menus and control functions.

Acura says the system has a slight concave shape to make it easier to find the center of the touchpad. The design also provides users with tactile feedback.

The screen is divided into two sections. In addition to the main zone, a smaller secondary area on the side allows users to view two features at the same time. Acura took the wraps off the redesigned RDX at last week’s New York auto show. Sales are due to start this summer.

A demonstration video of the touchpad system is available here.
