Tesla Motors Co. CEO Elon Musk says he plans to develop a luxury electric pickup truck based on the best-selling Ford F-150 and introduce it in about five years.
Tesla expects sell about 21,500 Model S electric luxury sedans this year. Musk says he wants to build a battery-powered version of the F-150 in part because the truck is such a popular product. Ford sells about 700,000 F-150s annually.
A truck could make sense for Tesla because electric motors offer huge immediate torque, making them well suited for towing and hauling.
Before the truck comes to market, however, Tesla must successfully launch the Model X crossover late next year and deal with concerns raised by three recent crash-related fires in Model S cars.
