Chrysler Group LLC's $60,000 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat coupe has been awarded a U.S. highway fuel economy rating of 22 mpg.

The car is propelled by a 6.2-liter, supercharged Hemi V-8 rated at 707 hp. Chrysler's 8-speed automatic delivers the Environmental Protection Agency's 22-mpg rating; mileage slips to 21 mpg with the optional 6-speed manual gearbox.

The car's supercharger is tended by two heat exchangers that maintain an intake air temperature maximum of 140 F (60 C) at flow rates as high as 30,000 liters per minute. Chrysler says the configuration maintains rated engine power even under 60 miles of racing in ambient temperatures of 100 F (38 C).

Both available transmissions have been modified to handle the Hellcat's output. The automatic adds one additional pinion gear in the 1st and 3rd gear sets and five extra clutch-pack disks. The manual transmission is fitted with a fortified 258-mm clutch and comes with its own internal cooling pump and external oil cooler.
