Nissan Motor Co. says the 2017 version of its GT-R coupe is the most significant update to the high-performance model since the high-performance car bowed in 2007.

The overhaul includes a restyled exterior, updated interior and a host of performance enhancements. Nissan introduced the new GT-R on Wednesday at the New York auto show.

The front end is highlighted by an updated version of Nissan’s “V-Motion” grille, which has been enlarged to improve engine cooling. A new hood features more pronounced character lines that flow into a reshaped bumper and front spoiler lip.

A higher beltline is designed to make the car look wider and the door sills are pushed out to better manage airflow. The rear end gets new bodywork, with side air vents that flank quad exhaust tips.

Nissan says the exterior changes enhance high-speed stability while maintaining the car's 0.26 drag coefficient.

The 2017 model also has a more rigid body structure and upgraded suspension, which Nissan says allows for higher cornering speeds and further improves stability during rapid lateral transitions. At the same time, ride quality and NVH characteristics have been improved, according to the carmaker, which cites the use of active noise cancellation and sound absorption materials, including an acoustic glass windshield.

The GT-R's 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 now features ignition-timing control of individual cylinders and extra turbo boost. This increases the engine’s output to 565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque, which is up 20 ponies and 4 lb-ft over the outgoing model. Mid- and high-speed acceleration also are said to be faster. The engine is mated to a revised 6-speed dual-clutch transmission that is quieter and provides smother shifts, according to the carmaker.

Interior upgrades include a new dashboard and an instrument panel wrapped in Nappa leather with a lightweight cushion layer. An 8-inch touchscreen replaces the current model’s 7-inch unit, and the number of knobs and switches is reduced from 27 to 11.

A new side-support construction reduces the weight of the front seats, while enhancing comfort and support on long drives, according to Nissan.
