Honda Motor Co. has attributed a 12th fatality in the U.S. to the explosion of a faulty Takata Corp. airbag inflator.
The unusual incident occurred a year ago and involved a person who was attempting to repair a 2001 Honda Accord sedan at a home near Miami, the Associated Press reports. The car’s ignition switch was on, and the inflator was activated by a hammer blow.
Honda says the individual was injured when the inflator blew shrapnel into the vehicle. The victim died a day later.
The fatality brings to at least 18 the number of people killed worldwide when a Takata inflator exploded. Some 120 million of the devices are being recalled by 19 carmakers.
