Wireless charging will debut as an option in some electric cars in 2018, says Chris Borroni-Bird, vice president of strategic development at Qualcomm Technologies Inc., a company that has helped pioneer the technology.

Plugless charging also will be an attractive feature for electric cars equipped with the ability to park themselves. Eventually, Borroni-Bird says, the capability—which is as safe and efficient as plug-in charging—will be as common as wi-fi connectivity is to mobile phones and laptops.
