In-car electronics are enhancing safety by assessing and responding to changing conditions faster than the human driver can, notes Ken Kaiser, vice president, Global Electronics Engineering, at TRW Automotive.
One example is TRW's lane centering assist system, which uses a small camera mounted behind the rear view mirror to automatically keep a vehicle centered in its lane on highways though integration with the vehicle's electric power steering.
The system makes highway driving safer and more relaxing, and can also vibrate the steering wheel or sound a chime to warn a driver who strays accidentally across a lane marker.
