A team of students from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has set a new acceleration record for an electric vehicle.

The team's all-wheel-drive DUT12 made the dash from zero to 100 kph in 2.15 seconds, topping the previous record for an electric vehicle of 2.68 seconds.

The run also eclipsed the world's quickest piston-powered production car, the 500-hp Ariel Atom V8, which made the dash in 2.3 seconds in 2010.

The 320-lb DUT12 is propelled by four electric motors, one in each front-wheel hub and two driving the rear wheels through a centrally mounted gearbox. The motors produce a combined 135 hp, according to the students.
