Some 22% of new cars sold this year are painted white, which remains the world's most popular color, according to PPG Industries' annual color trend study.

Other top colors this year are silver (20%), black (19%), gray (12%), red (9%), tan (8%) and blue (7%). White, silver and black have led the list for years, although carmakers increasingly are enhancing those colors with metallic flake effects.

Regional tastes in car colors continue to vary slightly. White, black, gray and silver are the top four colors in Europe and North America. In Asia Pacific, silver, white, black and tan are the most popular, with gray adorning only 8% of new cars.
