Volkswagen AG’s main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, has been named the winner of the OEM category in this year’s Automotive Lean Production Award competition in Europe.

More than 80 European plants were assessed by a team of experts. The annual award, which was started in 2006, is sponsored by the Automobil Produktion magazine and Agamus Consult GmbH.

Facilities are rated on a variety of efficiency, quality, value, management, maintenance, automation and Industry 4.0 metrics.

VW’s Wolfsburg’s plant was hailed for its productivity and first-time through quality. The facility, which was opened in 1945, builds about 3,500 vehicles per day. Current output consists of the Golf, Golf Sportsvan, Touran and Tiguan models.

This is the third straight year a German plant has won the original equipment manufacturers category award. Mercedes-Benz’s Bremen facility took home the trophy last year, following Audi’s Neckarsulm plant in 2016.
