Volkswagen AG sold 763,800 passenger and commercial vehicles worldwide in May compared with 708,800 units a year earlier.

In the first five months of 2012, VW reports an 8% gain in global group sales to 3.7 million vehicles. Demand edged up 2% to 1.6 million units across Europe. Gains in central and eastern Europe (30% to 262,600 units) and Germany (4% to 493,900 units) narrowly offset a 6% decline to 825,800 vehicles in the rest of western Europe.

VW's Asia-Pacific sales jumped 18% to 1.2 million units in the January-May period, including advances in China (18% to 1.1 million units) and India (12% to 51,700 units). Volume climbed 22% to 318,700 vehicles in North America and was flat at 376,700 units in South America.
