Volkswagen AG's new 2014 Golf small hatch is lighter, lower, slightly larger and as much as 23% more efficient than its sixth-generation predecessor.

VW showed the new model in Berlin on Tuesday, revealing some but not many details. The car makes its public debut at the Paris auto show later this month.

The new Golf uses VW's MQB (modular transverse matrix) architecture, which debuted earlier this year in the redesigned Audi A3 small sedan. Exterior styling mildly updates the current model's appearance, but the interior has been dramatically redesigned and upgraded.

VW developed two new engine families for the Golf in Europe that will provide a power range from 85 hp to 147 hp.
