Volkswagen AG is preparing a global media agency review, according to Advertising Age, which cites unnamed sources.

VW has worked with WPP plc's London-based MediaCom since 1998. The agency's current extension expires at the end of 2016.

One Ad Age source says the review is likely to continue for several years. Observers predict the carmaker will closely scrutinize MediaCom's performance in the U.S. market, where the VW brand has failed to gain traction for years. Last year Volkswagen sales there dropped 10% to 407,700 units as the market expanded 6%.
