Volkswagen AG appears likely to drop the three-door version of its popular VW Polo minicar when the vehicle is redesigned in 2017, according to media reports in Europe.

Phasing out the three-door Polo would save the company €200 million, Der Spiegel says. Reuters notes that VW is trying to cut costs by sharing more parts among vehicles and entirely eliminating some low-volume models.

Der Spiegel, which cites no sources, says VW could discontinue rather than update the Beetle. The car was last refreshed in 2011.
