Volkswagen AG has unveiled a pair of concept hybrid-electric variants of its Golf small car at the carmaker's annual GTI tuning festival in Worthesee, Austria.
The Golf GTI First Decade concept teams a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels with a 48-volt electric motor that powers the rear wheels. Combined output is listed at 404 hp. Drivers can choose to tap both systems or use either one independently.
The other concept model, the GTE Estate ImulsE, features a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, 165-kW electric motor and 16.8-kWh battery pack. The systems generate a combined 201 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The vehicles were created by apprentices from VW’s facilities in Brunswick, Sachsen and Worthesee facilities in Germany. Both cars were produced by VW's in-house seating supplier Sitech Sitztechnik GmbH.
