Volkswagen AG is launching a global recall to remedy rear suspension parts in 1.1 million vehicles worldwide that could fracture after a rear-end crash.

The callback involves Jetta sedans, their Sagitar variant in China, and Beetle coupes and convertibles.

The U.S. recall covers 400,600 of the company's 2011-2013 model Jetta sedans and 41,700 Beetle coupes and convertibles made during the 2012-2013 model years.

VW says the rear trailing control arms of the recalled vehicles could sustain undetected damage in a rear or side-rear collision. If so, the control arms may suddenly fracture later, producing significant vehicle instability.

For cars that haven't been involved in a crash, VW says it will install a sheet metal inlay in each control arm that will emit a warning sound if the component is later damaged in a rear-end collision. For cars that already have been in a crash, dealers will inspect and replace the control arms if necessary.
