Volkswagen AG plans to begin selling its Last Mile Surfer electric scooter next year in Europe. Designed to be stowed in a vehicle's trunk, the 24-lb scooter can be used to shuttle drivers from remote parking spots to their final destination.

The three-wheel scooter is powered by a lithium-ion battery that provides a driving range of about 12 miles. Riders can steer the scooter and control speed via a center handle, which folds down into the base platform when not in use.

VW will price the scooter at €1,000 ($1,100). It will compete against Toyota's upcoming Winglet scooter and the Segway personal transporter. Segway was purchased in April by Beijing-based Ninebot Inc.
