VW built about 230,000 of the two-door cabriolet at its factory in Setubal, Portugal, since the car was introduced in 2006. But sales last year shrank to 3,200 units as European demand for convertibles dropped 20%.
CEO Martin Winterkorn signaled the demise of the car last autumn, telling Der Spiegel the car's future was "seriously being reconsidered."
