The carmaker has tested updated versions of the hatchback—including 400- and 420-hp variants—in recent years. But internal research found limited demand for such a vehicle.

VW is expanding its R-badged performance range with the T-Roc R that was unveiled earlier this month at the Geneva auto show. The company also is planning a next-generation Golf R that is expected to generate slightly more than 300 hp. At least two other R models also are said to be in the works.
