VW Nixes High-Output Golf

Volkswagen AG has decided not to pursue a production version of the Golf R400 concept it presented in 2014.

The carmaker has tested updated versions of the hatchback—including 400- and 420-hp variants—in recent years. But internal research found limited demand for such a vehicle.

Increasing output from the 300 hp that is typical of current “hot-hatches” to 400 hp would cut potential sales volume in half, Jost Capito, who heads VW’s R program, tells Top Gear. He notes that customers aren’t asking for that much power, and those who do want to keep the price under €50,000 ($56,000).
 

VW is expanding its R-badged performance range with the T-Roc R that was unveiled earlier this month at the Geneva auto show. The company also is planning a next-generation Golf R that is expected to generate slightly more than 300 hp. At least two other R models also are said to be in the works.
