Volkswagen Group has surpassed all other carmakers with four vehicles on the list of semifinalists for this year's North American Car and Truck of the Year awards.

VW's contenders are the Audi A3 and VW Golf cars and Audi Q3 and Porsche Macan crossover vehicles.

Other semifinalists in the car category are the Acura TLX, Chrysler 200, Ford Mustang, Honda Fit, Hyundai Genesis, Hyundai Sonata, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Toyota Camry.

Other candidates for truck of the year are the Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford F-150, GMC Canyon, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, Mercedes-Benz GLA Class, Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback and Toyota Highlander.

In December the lists will narrow to three finalists in each category. The car and truck of the year winners will be announced ahead of the Detroit auto show in early January.

The NACTOY awards are granted by a panel of U.S. and Canadian automotive journalists from an initial list of several dozen entries representing all-new or significantly redesigned vehicles.
