Volkswagen AG narrowly outsold Toyota Motor Corp. in January-March to become the world’s biggest carmaker.

VW’s group volume advanced 1% to 2.51 million in the first quarter in spite of the company's diesel emission cheating scandal. Growth in deliveries of Audi, Skoda and Porsche vehicles during the period offset a 1% decline in VW brand sales.

Sales by Toyota, which has led the auto industry for the past four years, slipped 2% to 2.46 million units in January-March. Third-place General Motors Co. saw its global sales dip 3% to 2.36 million vehicles in the same period.
