Volkswagen AG's supervisory board is meeting today to resolve the leadership crisis sparked on Friday when Chairman Ferdinand Piech withdrew his support of CEO Martin Winterkorn.
Winterkorn has the backing of more than half the 20-member board. But Piech wields extraordinary power and has a history of abruptly shuffling management. Observers say Winterkorn's chances of staying on are slim.
Pundits predict the 78-year-old Piech, who is scheduled to retire in 2017, will present the board with an alternate senior management plan that includes his own successor. Matthias Mueller, CEO of VW Group's Porsche unit, is widely considered the most likely candidate to replace Winterkorn.
