Volkswagen AG has been cleared by KBA, Germany’s motor transport authority, to begin repairing Golf hatchback cars that were equipped with diesels rigged to circumvent emission standards.
The recall targets about 15,000 Golfs with manual gearboxes and 2.0-liter Blue Motion diesels from VW’s “EA 189” engine family. The company says it will provide customers with free, “appropriate replacement mobility options” while repairs are made.
The updates will bring nitrogen oxide emissions into compliance without affecting fuel economy, performance or noise levels, according to VW.
The Golf recall is the latest in a long series of model-specific callbacks VW is conducting this year for 2.5 million diesels in Germany. The company plans to duplicate the process elsewhere across Europe to fix another 6 million diesels that also were fitted with cheater software.
