The Honda Civic compact car and Volvo XC90 premium crossover/SUV have been named the 2016 North American car and truck of the year, respectively, by a panel of 57 journalists.
The redesigned Civic edged out the Chevrolet Malibu by 22 points to take the car title, with the Mazda MX-5 Miata finishing third. On the truck side, the XC90 outpaced the Honda Pilot and Nissan Titan XD, which finished second and third, by about 200 points each.
Both vehicles are repeat winners, with the XC90 taking home the truck title in 2003 and the Civic earning top honors on the car side in 2006.
Vehicles were evaluated on a mix of factors, including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and overall value. Judges could award 10 points each in the car and truck categories—either all to a single model or split among multiple vehicles.
