AB Volvo plans to begin selling electric trucks next year in Europe.
The Swedish truckmaker, which will begin pilot tests with select customers later this year, initially will target urban distribution applications. Volvo says the quiet operation of electric trucks will allow them to be used at night in city centers to help reduce congestion and improve efficiency.
The first electrified model will be a cab-over-engine configuration based on Volvo’s latest FE medium-duty chassis, according to media reports. Company officials say other applications in Europe and North America also are in the works.
A number of other companies have recently announced plans for their own electric trucks. The list includes Daimler, Cummins, Isuzu, Navistar, Tesla, Thor Trucks and Volkswagen.
Volvo already offers a variety of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric buses. The company also is testing autonomous electric buses and construction vehicles.
