AB Volvo has unveiled its first all-electric commercial truck, a midrange model that will go into high-volume production in 2019.
The new platform features a 185-kW motor that delivers 313 lb-ft (425 Nm) of torque through a two-speed transmission. Customers will be able to choose battery capacities between 100 kWh and 300 kWh that provide a range of as much as 300 km (186 miles) per charge.
The batteries can be full charged in 1-2 hours via a high-power DC unit or about 10 hours with an AC charger, according to Volvo. The company notes that a usage analysis has determined that the low-noise trucks can complete their routes in one-third as much time when scheduled to avoid peak-hour traffic.
