AB Volvo has unveiled its first all-electric commercial truck, a midrange model that will go into high-volume production in 2019.

The Volvo FL Electric platform is designed for trucks used as urban delivery or trash pickup applications. The first two trucks have been deployed by two test customers in Gothenburg.

The new platform features a 185-kW motor that delivers 313 lb-ft (425 Nm) of torque through a two-speed transmission. Customers will be able to choose battery capacities between 100 kWh and 300 kWh that provide a range of as much as 300 km (186 miles) per charge.

The batteries can be full charged in 1-2 hours via a high-power DC unit or about 10 hours with an AC charger, according to Volvo. The company notes that a usage analysis has determined that the low-noise trucks can complete their routes in one-third as much time when scheduled to avoid peak-hour traffic.
