Researchers at Volvo Car Corp.'s concept center in Los Angeles have developed a super-portable, 11-lb self-inflating child seat concept intended for situations where bulky traditional seats are not practical.
The design has a quiet built-in pump that inflates the seat in 40 seconds. When deflated, the seat resembles a small backpack that can fit into a weekend bag. Bluetooth connectivity enables the seat to be inflated remotely.
The concept is about half the weight of a conventional child seat. Its compact design makes it easy to use in taxis, buses and other vehicles not normally equipped to handle infant passengers.
The rear-facing seat is made of a strong drop-stitch fabric that can sustain high internal pressure. Volvo says the material, originally developed by the military for inflatable aircraft, has been adopted in the boating industry.
