Volvo Car Corp. has decided not to participate in next year’s Geneva auto show.

Volvo’s announcement follows those of several other carmakers in recent months that have decided to skip upcoming auto shows. Noting that automatic participation at such events is no longer viable, Volvo says it will focus on “purpose-specific” communications based on the timing of upcoming products and technologies.

The company may return to the Geneva show in the future. But such events must evolve to meet changing industry needs for Volvo to consider doing so, says Bjorn Annwall, the company’s senior vice president of strategy, brand and retail.
