Truckmaker AB Volvo says it has sold more than 3,000 hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric buses since launching its first hybrid model in 2010.

Last year the company sold 533 electrified buses and now offers such vehicles in 22 countries across Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. Nearly half the cumulative sales have been in in the U.K. Colombia is the next-largest market, accounting for about 15% of the total.

Volvo says its hybrid models, which operate on electricity at start-up and when idling, are 39% more efficient than conventional diesel buses. Full electric buses are said to be 80% more energy efficient than diesels.
